A. Trying to deflect blame by throwing the game's best and classiest closer under the bus.

"Closers, that's just the way we go about our business. Just like Mariano [Rivera] last night," said Papelbon, referencing the game-turning grand slam Rivera gave up to Minnesota's Jason Kubel the day before. "Forget about it. Move on. That's the nature of the beast."

THAT'S IT. CONSIDER THIS YOUR FINAL WARNING OF A CEASE AND DESIST NOTICE, PAPELBLOWN.

DON'T EVER, EVER, EVER COMPARE YOURSELF TO MARIANO RIVERA AGAIN.

YOU'RE LUCKY TO BREATHE THE SAME AIR AS HIM.

YOU BARELY DESERVE BEING ON THE SAME FIELD AS HIM.

AND YOU DEFINITELY DON'T MERIT ANY KIND OF COMPARISON TO HIM IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.

You could never be even a fraction of the player that Mo is. What he forgot about the sport, you'll never know.

Put simply, you're beneath him.

    This.

I was trying to explain to my gf about why I dislike Papelbon so intensely. It all goes back to the AS game and P-bon getting hinky about deferring to, not just some guy, but the best closer to ever live! Asshat.

I've seen a couple of defenders posting that P-bon hasn't blown a save since last July. Well, regular season save - they've conveniently forgetting his huge BS against the Angels in game 3 of the ALDS last year.

Listen, I personally hate Papelbon but think this is a bit of an overreaction. He was merely referring to closers in general and happened to use Mariano's name because Mariano is the only closer who's name even matters or comes to mind. To me it sounds like he was saying that it even happens to the best.

Yes, Mo is the best, but the best thing JP could have done was just say "hey, I had a bad night, I'm human, that's how it goes some of the time." Instead of bringing up Mo's BS the night before. When you blow it, you blow it, be a man, grow some balls, and accept responsibility for not saving a game, and thus putting your team even further back in the AL -- PERIOD!

Memo to Papelbon: If it wasn't for Papi and Manny (and possibly others that haven't been revealed yet) using steroids, you'd be a righthanded version of Billy Wagner, a somewhat talented loser with no place to talk.

YankeeChick, as long as Papelbon is mentioned in your blog, you will never be the Craziest person on the computer screen. I think he really does have a screw or two loose.

Have to agree with the second comment. He's saying the nature of the job is to move on after a BS, which all closers suffer, even the greatest of all-time. This is a non-issue.
